Otago Polytechnic

Teaching and learning FAQs

What will this mean for teaching?

Under the current proposal, a “lessons in a box” approach is envisaged, which constitutes a serious attack on teacher professionalism and academic freedom. This idea is embedded in the document, and we really must fight this if we want teaching to be more than the interaction with learners in class or online.

Will Otago Polytechnic be able to continue to innovate under the proposed model?

Small scale innovation is possible. Larger scale innovation, such as the development of new programmes or an initiative like EduBits, is unlikely.

Will our more innovative projects continue – eg EduBits, iamcapable, MPPs and DPPs and the Bachelor of Leadership for Change, etc?

Yes, we have been assured that current arrangements can continue.

Does CapableNZ have a long-term future?

Probably. Possibly as a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE).

Will research continue at Otago Polytechnic?

Yes, and one or more CoVEs could be established for applied research.
