Welcome to the Bachelor of Midwifery Programme Information Guide for 2020

Congratulations on receiving your Conditional Acceptance Letter for the Bachelor of Midwifery degree programme and accessing this site!

This page is designed to provide you with the information you need to plan your start in the programme. While we aim to provide you only with finalised details, there may at times be slight adjustments to dates, prices or other specific requirements. Please check the News Forum tab regularly, this is where we will outline any updates and answer any relevant questions submitted on this page. (khyla.mcbride@op.ac.nz).

Your acceptance into the programme is dependent on the conditions outlined in your letter. Your place in the programme will not be secured until you have signed and returned your Conditional Acceptance Form  along with the Vulnerable Children's Act Consent Form.

It is important that you also fulfill your immunisation requirements - these must be submitted by the first day of the programme. Forms are provided under the Immunisation heading for you to complete.  

Please also ensure you have provided copies of any outstanding conditional acceptance requirements such as your drivers licence and/or first aid certificate.

  Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Akonga?

The word Akonga is the Māori term for a person who is learning or studies an academic subject. This also refers to your satellite teaching group (group of learners).

Who is a Kaiako?

This is your teacher or instructor.

Where will my Akonga be held?

When will my Akonga be held?

This is dependent on your Kaiako and will be determined at the beginning of the learning year.  You will however meet at the same time/day every week for between 3-5 hours.

What are my Year One placement requirements?

The first shifts you will engage in will be based in a hospital setting. You will be required to complete 220 hours (27 x 8 hours shifts) across the year. These are spread over four blocks in March-April, June-July, September and November. The shifts will be a mixture of day, afternoon and evening hours. Shifts may be in the antenatal, post natal and delivery wards depending on the hospital.

What will my follow throughs involve?

You will be required to follow five women through pregnancy, labour and birth, up until six weeks postnatally. This is to enable an understanding of how childbirth is experienced by the pregnant woman and her family.

These follow throughs must be sourced by the student individually. Prior to course commencement you may have follow-through women in mind, however these will need to be confirmed with our Year One staff and consent paperwork formalised beofre you can become involved in the follow-through.

What other weekly commitments can I expect?

You are also required to participate in regular Adobe Connect (online) tutorials. The online sessions are approximately 1.5 - 2 hours long and there are one or two of these each week. There will also be your individual course work and study.

What would my average week look like?

Included here is a monthly schedule created by a current Midwifery student during both 2018 and 2019. In this time period there were no intensives. Please also note that placement dates may differ between years.

Laptop or Personal Computer

All students will need a laptop computer. Otago Polytechnic has wireless internet available throughout its Dunedin campus and on Whitireia campus for the North Island-based students. Computers can be PC or Macintosh but must be internet ready.

Otago Polytechnic offers all students free access to Microsoft Office 365 Proplus.  This can be installed on up to five devices. Please click here to find detailed instruction. Laptops must have either built in microphones or a headset and microphone.

Students will need a home broadband internet connection.

Year One Equipment

These will also be available in an optional bundle at Intensive for between $100 - $150, depending on the choice of stethoscope.

  • Suturing Set – approximately $50 comprising:
    • one toothed tissue dissecting forcep with a ribbed or serrated mouth
    • one pair of scissors (one sharp and one blunt end)
    • one needle holder (8 inch length)
    • one artery forcep (preferred but not essential)
  • Digital Thermometer - approximately $15.00

EFTPOS will be available.

Please note that if you choose to purchase equipment during orientation week and you are flying home, you cannot take your instrument pack in your carry on luggage.  This must be stored as checked in luggage. 

Travel and Accommodation for Intensives

All students are responsible for travel cost to intensive weeks. This will involve flights, accommodation, transportation and food.

Travel and accommodation for Midwifery Practice Placements

Some Year One students (especially in rural areas) will need to travel to main centres with some clients and for specific midwifery practice experiences – please allow for extra costs of travel, accommodation and child care.  Petrol and accommodation will add up over the three years of the programme.

All students will need to leave home locations from time-to-time in Years Two and Three to access appropriate experience.

Year Three placements are individually negotiated but students should plan for at least two placements away from their home locations. Please plan for travel and accommodation costs of these placements. Main centre placements are contestable and students who live in main centres will be required to leave for at least one placement.

The first intensive week is held in Dunedin and must be attended by all students. All following intensives will be held in Dunedin for South Island students. Venue still to be confirmed for the North Island students on the Kapiti coast. These will be held at the same time but the weekly timetables will vary to enable some staff to travel between the two locations.

  Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you believe you are eligible for full credit or partial exemption for any course through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) because you have already met the course requirements through previous study, you may make a RPL application during the first intensive week. No applications will be considered before this date.

If this applies to you, please bring evidence of your previous study, such as a transcript and course description/outline, to the intensive. The relevant Course Coordinator will assess this information and decide whether you are eligible for full credit or partial exemption. Any changes to your path of study will be made once any RPL applications are approved. There is a charge of $80.00 per RPL application.

  Police Vetting

The new safety checking regulations of the Vulnerable Children's Act 2014 means that all students working with children as part of an education or vocational training programme are required to undergo a children's worker safety check. All applicants offered conditional places to the 2020 Bachelor of Midwifery programme must complete a Police vetting form prior to a final decision being made about your acceptance. This form must be submitted with your Conditional Place Offer. Personal information will be kept confidential and any acquired information will be destroyed after the relevant retention period as required per legislation. Clinical partners (such as DHBs) may request information pertaining to the VCA and we are required to confirm that we have made the necessary checks on students.

Please note: if you are an Australian Resident, the vetting form is modified to include a Australian National Police History Check. Please complete the Australian vetting form instead and submit this with your signed Conditional Place Offer.

  Immunisation

Otago Polytechnic is required by the agencies/practitioners that offer clinical/fieldwork placements to hold documentary evidence (i.e. a copy of laboratory results) of your immune status for certain diseases before the commencement of programmes. This information will be shared as necessary with clinical partners. The infectious diseases which we are required to hold immune status information on are: Varicella, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis.

Immune status can only be ascertained by a blood test.  To do this required testing, please take the attached blood test form to a Laboratory Collection centre in your area (details below). Costs for the tests are the responsibility of the student. As this is a course-related cost, Studylink may be able to assist through use of a student loan for course-related costs. The results of the tests will be sent directly to the Nurse at Otago Polytechnic Student Health. She will inform the school of your immune status and follow up with you if there are any concerns about your results.

The tests are a requirement of entry to the programme and you must have completed them by the 24th January, 2020. Please ensure you complete these tests once you have accepted your place on the programme.

Not immune

If you are not immune to any of the tested diseases, the nurse at Student Health will contact you and provide advice regarding vaccination. Students who are not immune to these diseases may not be permitted to access some clinical areas and/or may require treatment and clearance before being able to access some clinical areas. This could affect your progress through the programme. You may choose to be vaccinated. Vaccination is recommended to protect both you and your future clients. If you choose this option then you will need to provide Student Health with evidence of the vaccine you have had and the date it was given. 

Immunisation History

Additionally, please provide the Otago Polytechnic Student Health Nurse, Helen Munro, with a copy of your immunisation record. To do this, please phone your Doctor’s office and ask them to email a copy to you then forward this on to Helen at studenthealth@op.ac.nz with the subject line: Immune status BM 2020. We need this evidence in order to gain a full picture of your immunity and it will enable Student Health to provide specific advice if you are not immune to any diseases.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

It is strongly recommended that you are vaccinated for pertussis. Some of the organisations offering practice placements require students accessing their facilities to have been vaccinated for pertussis within the last 5 years.  (Please note - some providers ask for vaccination within a slightly longer time period so please ensure the last date of vaccination is evident in your immunisation record which you provide to the school and we will follow up with you if necessary).

Influenza

It is strongly recommended that students are vaccinated annually against influenza. This may be compulsory in some facilities in 2020.

Immunisation Forms

  • Dunedin, Central and Wellington satellites:

Please find attached the immunisation forms required to complete your immunity status. These results will be automatically fowarded to student health in Dunedin.

Take this form (will be added in September) to one of the Laboratory Collection center's in your area - Dunedin/Central/Southland and Wellington.

  • Whanganui and Palmerston North satellites:

Please take this form (will be added in September) to one of the Laboratory Collection center's in your area. You also have the option only in these two satellites of having your tests completed during Orientation week.  This is due to the slight price increase in these regions.  Time will be set aside for you during orientation week if you prefer this alternative.

  • MRSA Screening

This is required for Dunedin, Southand, Central Otago and Whanganui only. 

All students who will have a clinical placement (hospital and in the community) in the above areas for 2020 require MRSA screening to be obtained prior to the placement commencing:

The Southern District Health Board and Whanganui DHB have an infection control policy around screening any healthcare workers (this includes students) for MRSA. MRSA is Methicillin-resistant staphyloccus aureus infection that is caused by a type of staphyloccus bacteria that has become resistant to many antibiotics. All students commencing placements in those areas are required to have a screening swab done prior to starting. 

To do this, the simplest way is to follow these instructions:

  1. Go to any Community Laboratory and tell them you need MRSA swabs prior to commencing your clinical placements within the SDHB and/or Whanganui.
  2. They will get you to fill out a self referral form.  On this form, please request the results are sent to you personally via email.
  3. The cost for this is approximately $22 to $33 per swab (this may vary depending on location)
  4. You will be given a swab by the staff at the laboratory and can undertake the nasal swab yourself.
  5. Please email the result directly to Khyla McBride (Khyla.McBride@op.ac.nz).

Please note that if you do have a positive result, you will need to go to your GP or Student Health for treatment and will not be able to start your clinical placement until you have a negative result.  Because of this, we suggest you obtain the swab as soon as possible as it takes time for the culture to grow once your swab has been taken and then there is a timeframe for treatment and retesting.

Accommodation

Short term accomodation is available relatively close to the Polytechnic. Browse the accomodation heading on the Otago Polytechnic Dunedin campus website. Also newly finished is our Otago Polytechnic Student Village which provides on-campus living for students. Please note there is no short term accomodation at City College. St Margaret's offer accommodation over the 2019 summer school period which extends to February 2020.

Day One

The Midwifery programme starts on Monday 27 January, 2020 at 9.00am with the first intensive in Dunedin. We will start the day with a Mihiwhakatau (welcome) which will be held in the Sargood Gallery at the Sargood Centre, off Logan Park Drive, at our Dunedin campus. The School of Midwifery is located on the sixth floor of H Block. See attached map.

Moodle and IT requirements/information

During this week, you will be able to access Moodle, the learning platform used in the Bachelor of Midwifery. This can be accessed via the Otago Polytechnic Student Hub: https://www.op.ac.nz/hub/. You will also be given an information session on Otago Polytechnic email and Adobe Connect. The Midwifery programme relies heavily on these computer programmes so it is important that you feel comfortable using them.

Please bring your laptop and headset to the first intensive as there will be an opportunity to speak to IT about any issues you may have whilst here on campus. Helpdesk will configure your laptop to enable remote assistance. If you have any problems call 0800 765 948 (0800 POLY IT) or email servicedesk@op.ac.nz).

Food Requirements

During the week we will be sharing some meals. If you have any specific dietary requirements please let us know by emailing khyla.mcbride@op.ac.nz by the 13th January, 2020

Outdoor Activities

We will be participating in outdoor activities during this week. The weather can be quite mixed at this time of year, so do bring summer clothing, as well as a good selection of warmer clothing including walking shoes and raingear.

  Whānau Information Sessions

The purpose of these Information Sessions is to inform prospective students, your whānau and your other support people, about how our midwifery programme is structured and to have a discussion about the support our students require to assist them in succeeding in the Midwifery degree. These will be held in all satellite locations. Further information to follow on confirmed dates for satellites not listed below.

  Programme Content

The Bachelor of Midwifery degree is completed over three years of full-time study. Note that the credit value is equivalent to four years full-time study. All courses are compulsory.

YEAR ONE

Year one is foundational and courses provide a broad context for midwifery practice and the later development of specific midwifery knowledge and practice skills. Philosophically, year one focuses on the woman/wahine and her family/whanau; it explores the wider context of New Zealand's maternity services and the options and choices available to women and families in various settings. Gain practice experience in maternity facilities for the acquisition of foundation practice skills, and through one-on-one continuity of care with women and midwives where you provide a support role for women throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period.

Midwifery Ways of Knowing 1

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face components during intensives.

Be introduced to the concepts and theory upon which midwifery practice is based, focusing on partnership, and the historical and social contexts of current midwifery practice in New Zealand. Learn how to search for evidence and access information. Explore the main approaches to research, and begin to develop the skills needed to critique and apply research to practice.

Midwifery Assessment and Practice Skills

Delivery: Theoretical face-to-face components during intensives reinforced by online resources and tutorials, and small group face-to-face tutorials, and practical midwifery practice placements supported by face-to-face tutorials.

Develop professional expertise in the practical foundation skills of midwifery practice and gain the skills to create therapeutic relationships as a basis for partnership with women and to promote effective professional relationships with peers and colleagues. 

Sharing the Woman's Experience of Childbirth

Delivery: Following the experience of up to five wahine through their pregnancy and childbirth experience, supported by theoretical components during intensive block courses, reinforced by online resources and tutorials, and small group face-to-face tutorials with a kaiako.

Become acquainted with the culture of childbirth in New Zealand and the community support available for childbearing wahine and whanau. By acting as a birth companion to wahine over the academic year, you will learn to recognise the individual realities of the experience of childbirth for themselves and their whanau. Develop skills in forming culturally-safe relationships with wahine and whanau and take the opportunity to utilise theories of human development to identify and understand what you bring to the relationship.

Women in Aotearoa New Zealand

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face components during intensives.

Develop an awareness of the importance of culture as a critical component in the delivery of midwifery care. Based on the understanding that awareness of one's own cultural identity is required for safe midwifery practice, this course also introduces you to contemporary analyses of gender and power in relation to ethnicity, sexuality, body image, personal relationships, work, welfare, education and popular culture. It provides you with an opportunity to examine and reflect on issues that midwives are likely to face as they work with women and their families.

Bioscience Foundations

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face tutorials during intensives.

Enable learners to explain the anatomy and physiology of human body systems within the parameters of normal homeostatic functioning. This will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the anatomical and physiological changes that take place in a woman’s body during pregnancy, labour & birth and the postpartum period and also provide the foundations for understanding the development and functioning of the fetus and neonate. 

Hauora M¯aori

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face components during intensives and an overnight marae visit.

Explore the historical and contemporary concepts of Hauora M¯aori and Tikanga/Tikaka M¯aori within the framework of the Treaty of Waitangi and examine the implications for the delivery of midwifery and maternity services for M¯aori.

Integrated Midwifery Practice 1

Delivery: Face-to-face during four intensive integration days.

Embrace the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills you have gained across the 100 level papers and apply these to midwifery practice situations. Advance your critical thinking and reflective practice skills and begin to develop professional midwifery judgement. The experiential nature of this course provides you with the chance to further explore personal issues fundamental to acquiring the skills, attitudes and knowledge base of midwifery.

Pharmacology Foundations

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face teaching during intensives.

The ambition of this course is to enable our future midwives to understand and explain the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, accurately perform drug calculations, and outline the legislation related to prescribing medicines.

YEAR TWO

Year two provides the opportunity to develop specific midwifery practice knowledge and skills. Courses focus on the knowledge and skills required for midwives to work in the Midwifery Scope of Practice and to work collaboratively with other health professionals when required outside of the Midwifery Scope of Practice. Gain midwifery practice experience in a variety of settings including one-on-one continuity of care experiences with women and midwives, and undertake placements in a range of maternity facilities, particularly secondary and tertiary facilities. Philosophically, the second year of the programme focuses on the midwife and her developing professional framework for practice.

Midwifery Ways of Knowing 2

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face components during intensives.

Designed to enable you to integrate further concepts and ideas into a professional framework for beginning midwifery practice, this course builds on knowledge gained during your first year and provides an opportunity for analysis and critique. Explore professionalism, standards for practice, ethical and legal responsibilities, principles of informed consent, information sharing and current midwifery issues, and extend your understanding of research principles and methods to allow you to become an evidence-informed practitioner.

Midwifery Scope of Practice

Delivery: Theoretical content is accessed online, supported by face-to-face components during intensives, face-to-face small group tutorials (akonga), online tutorials and practice placements.

This course recognises the midwife as the expert in normal pregnancy and childbirth and acknowledges the woman's autonomy throughout her childbirth experience. The role of the midwife in normal childbirth, acting in partnership with the woman, is explored and you will develop midwifery knowledge and skills that are integrated into midwifery practice. Midwifery practice experiences within a continuity of care framework provide the basis for the development of expertise within the Midwifery Scope of Practice. The development of a negotiated relationship between the midwife and the woman, as a central tenet of Midwifery Partnership, is integral to this.

The Midwife and Collaborative Practice

Delivery: Theoretical face-to-face components during intensives reinforced by online resources and tutorials, and small group face-to-face tutorials, and practical allocated placements and follow-throughs supported by face-to-face tutorials.

Examine the role of the midwife in situations where a woman may have a pre-existing medical condition and/or develops a complication during pregnancy, labour, birth or in the post-natal period. In these situations, midwives work in collaboration with other health professionals and the nature of this collaborative relationship is explored during this course, including how the midwifery partnership is maintained. Gain experience in a secondary/tertiary maternity hospital where the emphasis will be on exploring the effects of pre-existing conditions, complications, and variations of normal on the care of women and babies during the childbirth process. You will also obtain experience in recognising complications and variations from the normal, initiating an appropriate response, and consultation and referral processes.

Bioscience in Pregnancy and Childbirth

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face tutorials during intensives.

Enable learners to critically examine the anatomical and physiological changes that take place in a woman’s body during pregnancy, labour and birth and the puerperium, and the accompanying development of the baby, and to discriminate between normal homeostasis and pathological processes in the woman and/or baby during this time.   

Pharmacology and Prescribing

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face teaching during intensives.

The framework of this course recognises the midwife as an autonomous practitioner in the provision of primary midwifery care. In this role, midwives are legally able to prescribe and administer medications to women and neonates during the normal childbirth experience. This usually involves care during pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium. Gain comprehensive knowledge of the matters surrounding prescribing, and the use and administration of medication, within normal childbirth. Explore the pharmacological aspects of drugs commonly prescribed by midwives, as well as those prescribed by obstetricians/physicians, for women experiencing deviations from normal in childbirth (including women with pre-existing medical conditions).

Integrated Midwifery Practice 2

Delivery: Face-to-face during intensives two and four.

Enjoy the chance to integrate the knowledge and skills you have gained across the 200 level courses and apply these to midwifery practice situations. Continue to develop your critical thinking and reflective practice skills, and professional midwifery judgement. The experiential nature of this course provides you with the opportunity to further explore personal issues fundamental to developing the skills, attitudes and knowledge base of midwifery.

Women's Health

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials supported by face-to-face components during intensives.

Become acquainted with the connections between gender and health. Social relations that affect women's health will be investigated and specific women's health issues will be examined in depth. The ways in which women's health issues may affect the experience of pregnancy, childbirth, mothering and breastfeeding and the implications for midwifery practice will also be explored.

The Midwife, Newborn and Breastfeeding

YEAR THREE

Year three provides substantial opportunity for integration and consolidation of your learning from years one and two. An individualised programme of placements will provide significant opportunity for midwifery practice in one-on-one continuity of care experiences with midwives and women, and also in maternity facilities. Work more independently in the application of knowledge and skills in practice settings, consolidate your learning and demonstrate your readiness to meet the Competencies for Entry to the Register of Midwives. Philosophically, the third year focuses on the partnership between each midwife and woman in the shared experiences of pregnancy and childbirth.

Midwifery Ways of Knowing 3

Delivery: Face-to-face during intensives and two assignments.

Build on the knowledge you developed in Midwifery Ways of Knowing 1 and 2. Develop and articulate your professional framework for midwifery practice and obtain the necessary skills for evidence-informed midwifery practice.

Rural Midwifery Practice

Delivery: Allocated midwifery practice placements supported by face-to-face tutorials.

Explore the role of the midwife in providing midwifery services in rural settings, including understanding the effect of locality on midwifery decision-making. Issues of choice and safety for rural women will be examined, and innovative ways of providing midwifery care will be explored.

Continuity Midwifery Practice

Delivery: A continuity placement of 14 weeks duration with a lead maternity care midwife or practice supported by supervision, debriefing and face-to-face learning during intensives.

Embrace the opportunity to consolidate your midwifery skills, knowledge and professional behaviour within the Midwifery Scope of Practice by working alongside a midwife who is providing continuity of care to women as a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC). Explore issues of LMC practice for midwives including practice management.

Elective Midwifery Practice

Delivery: Allocated midwifery practice placements supported by online tutorials.

Enjoy the chance to consolidate your midwifery skills, knowledge and professional behaviour within the Midwifery Scope of Practice in one or two practice settings of your choice.

Secondary/Tertiary Midwifery Practice

Delivery: Allocated midwifery practice placements supported by face-to-face components during seminar weeks.

Gain experience in a secondary/tertiary maternity hospital, enabling you to achieve greater insight into the role of the midwife working within a secondary or tertiary maternity setting and to develop and enhance skills related to care within such settings. The nature of the collaborative relationship in these settings is further explored including how the midwifery partnership is maintained and you will acquire experience in recognising complications and variations from the normal, initiating an appropriate response, and the consultation and referral processes.

Sustainable Midwifery Practice

Delivery: Online resources and tutorials.

Building on the Sustainable Development course, examine sustainable midwifery practice as a carbon footprint model of excellence for the 21st century and investigate midwifery models of practice within the New Zealand maternity system. Focus on the growth and sustainability of the wider midwifery profession and look at how to develop a sustainable midwifery practice. International models will also be reviewed to help you understand the benefits of midwifery in providing a sustainable maternity system. The course will provide you with the opportunity to learn how to manage a small business as a self-employed midwife and will include legislative small business responsibilities and Inland Revenue Department (IRD) services, as well as information specific to the processes of self -employed midwifery practice in New Zealand.

Your workload

Becoming a midwife is a rewarding but demanding career with very unpredictable hours. Our programme is a four year degree taught in three years. The qualification is delivered as follows: 

  • 45 'programmed weeks' every year, averaging 35.5 hours per week
  • a minimum of 4,800 total programmed hours (480 credits) within which there is:
  • a minimum of 2,400 midwifery practice hours (240 credits) (of which a minimum of 1,280 hours or 128 credits are completed in year three), AND
  • minimum of 1,920 theory hours (192 credits).
  • Years one and two are structured through three 15-week trimesters and seven weeks of annual leave each year; there are four compulsory intensives in both years one and two.
  • Year three is structured individually to suit your needs and provides 34 weeks of midwifery practice experience at an average of 38.8 hours per week; there are two compulsory intensives in the final year.
