We strongly encourage our staff to upskill and develop themselves both professionally and personally. We even allocate funds to assist you. You will find out more once you have started working with us or ask your leader for more information about professional development.

Required training

All new staff complete a New Staff Induction Programme when they commence at OP.  This includes Health & Safety training and an introduction to our culture at OP. Much of this is delivered online with some face-to-face workshops.  

Other required training includes:

  • Treaty of Waitangi (two-day workshop) within first 12 months
  • The OP Way - Staff Induction (three hours) within first four months
  • Health and Safety modules and workshops, including the annual Warrant of Fitness
  • Managing Performance (for anyone with direct reports) within first 12 months
  • Recruitment and Selection – available to anyone (compulsory for anyone with direct reports within first 12 months) and needs to be completed before you can be on an interview panel.

Teaching qualifications

Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Education (GDTE)

To help us reach our goal of leading our sector in the achievement of educational excellence, the Leadership Team has resolved to ensure that all our academic staff have an appropriate higher level teaching qualification, so that you are as knowledgeable and skilled in teaching as you are in your professional area. To ensure this, Otago Polytechnic, will:

  • Suggest an appropriate pathway to complete the GDTE
  • Enrol you in the GDTE (120 credit, Level 7 programme)
  • Fully subsidise the cost of the programme
  • Depending on your terms of service, offer you a reduced teaching schedule during the first year to enable you to study.
Already have teaching qualifications (e.g. Secondary Teachers Diploma)?

Some credits may be given for teaching qualifications, enabling you to fast track through the GDTE.

No formal qualifications, but many years’ experience as a teacher of adults or tertiary students?

Discuss the Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) pathway, which takes this experience into account.

Master or Doctorate of Professional Practice

The Master of Professional Practice (MPP) and Doctorate of Professional Practice (DPP) are work-based learning programmes which focuse on enhancing the learner’s practice. It is personalised to the learner through a significant project which adds value to the learner and the Polytechnic. 

If you have an interest in the MPP or DPP, please contact Capable NZ in the first instance to register that interest. You will then be contacted by a Capable NZ facilitator to explore whether or not this is the programme for you.
