Automotive ākonga help Otago Rally make smooth start

Otago Polytechnic automotive ākonga played an important role in ensuring the Otago Rally went smoothly – even if the roads were bumpy.

With around 130 cars entered in this year’s rally, learners were busy helping race officials scrutinise each vehicle to ensure they were safe before their drivers (and co-drivers) strapped in and hit the accelerator pedal.

The work included checking roll-cages, seats, harnesses, race suits, helmets and first-aid kits, as well as making sure the cars represented the competition class in which they were entered.

It was the third year Otago Polytechnic automotive learners have helped rally organisers.

Covering approximately 280km and involving a strong international contingent, the Otago Rally began on Friday 31 March, with scrutineering at Otago Polytechnic’s Mechanical Engineering workshops on Donald St, Kaikorai Valley.

Automotive programme manager Hamish Miller thanks Daniel Oskam and the team at the Donald St workshops.

"This was a very well organised and professional operation. Thanks, too, to Glen Ford and the Scouts for running the barbecue."
