Student Story
Silva McDowell
Tallinn was a really nice city to study in. There was always something socially happening, especially music and especially when it started getting warmer.
What was the best part of your Study Abroad experience?
The best part of my study abroad was probably the people I met and the time I spent with them. Most of the people I connected with were other exchange students, so it was super easy to talk to people because everyone was really interested and open to connecting with others. I was also able to travel a lot while living abroad in Tallinn; some of those trips were taken with friends I made while in Tallinn as well, which were a lot of fun. I have also since visited a few friends and am still in contact with them.
What did you get out of studying overseas (that you might have otherwise missed out on)?
I got to experience studying in a very different institution, one that had a different range of Design departments than Otago Polytechnic. It meant I was able to take a range of optional classes in areas I usually wouldn't have had the opportunity to try, which was really enjoyable. I took a movement class, an exhibition class, fashion-related workshops and even a language class.
What was it like to study in Estonia?
Tallinn was a really nice city to study in. There was always something socially happening, especially music and especially when it started getting warmer. There are some really nice beaches and urban forest/wild green areas. I took a couple of trips to different places in Estonia, including to 2 of the many islands, which were really beautiful. One of the islands, Khinu Island, is supposedly the last standing matriarchy in Europe. I learnt a lot about the culture, the history and even some of the language while I was there.
What kinds of support did you receive from OP around Study Abroad (whether that’s about applying, preparation, travel, being overseas, etc)?
Nicky really helped me a lot while I was deciding and applying, and then before I left, answering all my questions and helping me communicate with the exchange coordinator from the other school. She helped me fill out applications and explained in detail the specific things I would need to organise. In general, I did a lot of organising by myself and with the support of my family. Luckily, I have experience living overseas previously, so it wasn't completely new, but very different to do by yourself as a young adult.
