Otago Polytechnic

When: Monday 20 November
Time: 12.00pm – 1.00pm
Where: H608

Where:

Gallaway Cook Allan, 123 Vogel Street. We are a law firm, in the heart of the Warehouse District in a beautifully restored wool and grain warehouse. We’ve got a great firm culture, very progressive, modern and friendly.
Vogel Street is the place to be in town; lots of very cool businesses and cafes in the area.

What is a Legal Assistant?

In the old days we would have said Legal Secretary but the legal industry and the nature of supporting lawyers is changing.  The core of the role is the same – helping lawyers to serve their clients, making sure that the work is done as smoothly and efficiently as possible. What has changed is exactly how that is done – advances in technology means that much of the work is about using software to manage a business process (for example, buying or selling a house).  Paper is also becoming a thing of the past so we need to be very good at managing electronic files.

What does the training look like?

We have put together a programme that will run for between 12 and 18 months, and give you a good grounding and set of skills in all of the different areas of the firm. You will spend time in each of our business areas (commercial, litigation and private clients), as well as accounts, marketing, IT, and reception. At the end of the training you will slot into one of the teams.

What are we looking for?

We want people who are hard-working, motivated and enthusiastic. You need to be resilient and able to cope with lots of things going on at the same time. You need to be a real team player and have a strong customer focus (both for your internal clients and the firm’s clients).

What happens next?

Come along to an information session and listen to Galloway Cook Allan talk about their new graduate programme.
Open to any student graduating from different disciplines.
