New remote access system for OP

Remote access enables you to access the Otago Polytechnic network from remote locations. This means you can work and study offsite, such as from home, while having the same online access as an on-campus learner.

Otago Polytechnic's old remote access software (VMWare View) has been replaced by a newer product called Citrix.

How do I access Citrix?

Head to https://citrix.op.ac.nz and sign in using your OP username and password. On first use, you will need to install the Citrix Receiver/Workspace app. Full installation instructions are available here for PC and here for Mac.

When is this all happening? Do I need to do anything?

Citrix is available right now to use. All you need to do is get in and start using it.

How does Citrix differ from VMWare View?

With View, you were presented with a full Windows 7 virtual desktop, including some pre-installed applications and a full start menu, local disks and operating system. For most users, when you sign off View, the desktop is scrapped and any changes to it are lost at that point.

With Citrix, you launch into a modern and easy-to-use app view.

Where can I access Citrix from?

Citrix is available on several different platforms. These include PC, Mac and most mobile devices, such as phones and tablets, where “Citrix Receiver/Workspace” is available in the relevant app store. Accessing Citrix applications works both within the internal campus network as well as externally (from home or another remote campus) – essentially wherever there is an internet connection available.

(Note that in August 2018 Citrix renamed Receiver to Workspace so you may find you end up downloading the Citrix Workspace app. A previously installed version of Receiver may auto update and then show up as Workspace.)
