Living with other students is a great way to adjust to life away from home. You will enjoy an instant sense of community with other new arrivals, and benefit from the safety of on-site support staff and optional organised recreational activities. Halls of residence provide low maintenance living, so that you can focus your energy on studying and exploring the local area.

‘Flatting’ or private shared accommodation

Flatting is a popular option for students who want more independence. You’ll share a house or apartment—called a flat—with other students or young professionals.

OP Website Explore Flatting 1200x610

What to expect when flatting:

  • Each person usually has their own bedroom.
  • Kitchens, bathrooms and living areas are shared.
  • You’ll buy your own groceries and cook your own meals.
  • You’ll split costs for rent, electricity, internet, and other bills.
  • You’ll need to manage household responsibilities like cleaning and budgeting.

Flatting gives you freedom and flexibility but also requires more responsibility. It’s a great way to live independently, make friends and experience life in New Zealand like a local.

Renting

If you're looking for a private place to live while you study, or want to provide accommodation for your family, renting is the perfect option. There are plenty of houses around Dunedin and Central Otago in quiet, family and pet friendly areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can you book accommodation for me?

No, you are responsible for arranging your own accommodation. If you are interested in Te Pā Tauira, our residential student village, you can indicate that during your application process. Please note that spaces are limited, so if you do not get a place you will need to explore other options.

What part of Dunedin should I live in?

Dunedin has unique neighbourhoods. Generally, the closer to campus you live, the more students will be in the neighbourhood. The North East Valley is popular with students, as it is close to campus and is walkable to the Octagon, which is the centre of town and the heart of the nightlife. Māori Hill, Roslyn and Mornington are quieter residential neighbourhoods with bus connections to campus. The Saint Clair and Saint Kilda neighbourhoods are close to the beach and have nice community amenities. When searching for housing, make sure to check how long it will take to campus if you are driving or taking the bus, and whether there is a supermarket nearby.

Is there any financial assistance for housing?
