About the programme

Employed as an adult educator and want to build on your skills and knowledge?

This work-based programme allows you to study in work, for work. Study is a combination of facilitated, self-directed and work-based learning. As a part-time learner, you should aim for around 10-20 hours per week, some of which will be within your own work context. You will need to also engage with the online resources and activities, and complete assessments.

This Certificate is a required qualification for employment at some tertiary institutions in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Courses include Teaching Approaches for Learner Success; Learner-centred Practice; Assessment and Moderation; and Perspectives on Teaching and Learning.

Courses

Teaching Approaches for Learner Success (10 credits)

Develop a range of strategies that facilitate learning for diverse learner needs.

  1. Evaluate teaching and learning models appropriate for their context.
  2. Use strategies, including feedback, and learning technologies that enhance learning for a diverse range of learners and abilities.

Learner-centred Practice (20 credits)

Learn how to be an effective facilitator of learning as appropriate to your teaching context.

  1. Design and implement learner-centred activities.
  2. Evaluate teaching and learning strategies to improve practice.
  3. Use strategies that enhance learning appropriate to the cultural context, the literacy needs, and the diversity of the learners.

Assessment and Moderation (15 credits)

Learn how to evaluate and improve assessment design and assessment practices within your teaching contexts.

  1. Use assessment principles and practices, including giving feedback, to enhance learning.
  2. Use moderation processes to ensure effective assessment practice.

Perspectives on Teaching and Learning (15 credits)

Embed skills that reflect the demands of your professional context into teaching and learning and respond to learner needs appropriately.

  1. Evaluate personal and professional influences on practice and reflect on how this informs pedagogy.
  2. Design and facilitate teaching and learning using appropriate frameworks to embed literacies and numeracy skills relevant to diverse contexts.

Further study options 

Depending on your other experience and qualifications, you may be eligible for the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning Design which is taught by distance.

Cancellation of a programme

Any programme of study, course or course occurrence may be cancelled or postponed where there are insufficient numbers. As far as is practically possible, we avoid cancelling or making other significant changes less than two weeks before the programme starts (or five working days for short courses). If this happens, we will do our best to suggest alternative study options for you. If you don’t want to do the alternative programme, we will give you a full refund. For international students, if a programme change affects your visa status, we will let you know and support you to find an alternative option. We also advise Immigration New Zealand of any programme change that will affect international students.
