Employed as an adult educator and want to build on your skills and knowledge?
This work-based programme allows you to study in work, for work. Study is a combination of facilitated, self-directed and work-based learning. As a part-time learner, you should aim for around 10-20 hours per week, some of which will be within your own work context. You will need to also engage with the online resources and activities, and complete assessments.
This Certificate is a required qualification for employment at some tertiary institutions in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Courses include Teaching Approaches for Learner Success; Learner-centred Practice; Assessment and Moderation; and Perspectives on Teaching and Learning.

What You Study
Courses
Teaching Approaches for Learner Success (10 credits)
Develop a range of strategies that facilitate learning for diverse learner needs.
- Evaluate teaching and learning models appropriate for their context.
- Use strategies, including feedback, and learning technologies that enhance learning for a diverse range of learners and abilities.
Learner-centred Practice (20 credits)
Learn how to be an effective facilitator of learning as appropriate to your teaching context.
- Design and implement learner-centred activities.
- Evaluate teaching and learning strategies to improve practice.
- Use strategies that enhance learning appropriate to the cultural context, the literacy needs, and the diversity of the learners.
Assessment and Moderation (15 credits)
Learn how to evaluate and improve assessment design and assessment practices within your teaching contexts.
- Use assessment principles and practices, including giving feedback, to enhance learning.
- Use moderation processes to ensure effective assessment practice.
Perspectives on Teaching and Learning (15 credits)
Embed skills that reflect the demands of your professional context into teaching and learning and respond to learner needs appropriately.
- Evaluate personal and professional influences on practice and reflect on how this informs pedagogy.
- Design and facilitate teaching and learning using appropriate frameworks to embed literacies and numeracy skills relevant to diverse contexts.
Further study options
Depending on your other experience and qualifications, you may be eligible for the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning Design which is taught by distance.
Workload
Your workload
All study is structured, with a combination of facilitated, self-directed and work-based learning, so you will need to have good time management skills. As a part-time student, you should typically aim for around 10-20 hours of study per week, some of which will be within your work context. You will be required to engage with the online resources and activities, and complete assessments.

Academic requirements
- NCEA Level 2 or equivalent.
- Alternative entry may be possible for those who do not meet the entry requirements but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience.
- All applicants must be working with students in a post-secondary environment and must meet the requirements of the Children’s Act 2014.
English Language requirements
- NCEA Level 3 New Zealand University Entrance OR
- Overall IELTS 5.5 (academic, no band score lower than 5.0) achieved in one test completed in the last two years, OR
- Acceptable alternative evidence of the required IELTS (see here for internationally recognised proficiency tests and proficiency outcomes for international students).

If the number of applicants exceeds the available places, a waitlist will be used to ensure preference is given to applicants in order of application.

If you have extensive knowledge and skills due to practical experience in this area, enquire about our recognition of prior learning process. You may have already gained credits towards this qualification.
Fees
Domestic fees
Additional costs
There are no additional costs, however you are required to be working in a post-secondary (tertiary) environment with a class of learners. It is expected that any learning materials you wish to develop for this course which might require small costs such as photocopying, printing, or software subscriptions would be covered by your employer.
Fees Free
The Government has announced that Fees Free for the first year of study or training will finish at the end of 2024. A final-year Fees Free policy will replace it, starting from 1 January 2025.
If you are a first-time tertiary learner in 2025, you may be able to get Fees Free for your final year of study or training. If you are eligible, you will need to apply for your entitlement through IRD from 2026 onwards.

Some support may be available for domestic part-time students if this programme offers a part-time study option.

Student Services Fee
For most students, your tuition fee shown above includes a Student Services Fee – also known as the Student Levy. This compulsory fee covers your access to the student services we offer. This cost is tailored depending on how you're studying.
The international tuition fee does not include your Student Levy. This will be calculated when you enrol with us.
