About the programme
This hands-on programme will give you all the skills and practical experience you need to become a qualified Painter and Decorator.
Get stuck into practical sessions in our purpose-built facilities where you’ll learn skills in surface preparation, painting, spray coating, wallpapering, scaffolding, and water-blasting. We’ll also teach you the basics of workplace safety fundamentals and you’ll gain core team and communication skills.
Your final project is a great chance to collaborate with other trades students, so you get experience of working across the different areas of the construction industry.
With work experience opportunities, guest speakers and the chance to be involved in our annual Charity House initiative, this programme will build your work-ready skills so you’re ready to hit the ground running when you graduate.
After completing the programme, you could move into the New Zealand Certificate in Painting and Decorating (Level 4) at BCITO and complete block courses at Otago Polytechnic. This pathway will give you the opportunity to become a Master Painter.

What You Study
Courses
Workplace Safety Fundamentals (15 credits)
This course will include (indicative) content such as:
- NZ Building Code
- Licensing requirements
- Resource Management Act
- Employment legislation
- Hazard identification and management (including identifying hazardous materials)
- Safe use, care and maintenance of construction trades tools and equipment
- Sourcing and gathering info including:
- material specifications
- safety data sheets.
Core Construction and Communication Skills (15 credits)
This course will include (indicative) content such as:
- Simple project specifications (quality, materials, finishes)
- Basic plan drawings (elevations, plan view, sections, site plans)
- Perform calculations to solve simple problems (area, volume, angles)
- Teamwork and communication methods
- How to gather and present evidence of your trade-related experience (e.g. CV writing)
- Cultural safety and awareness
Allied Trades Tools, Materials and Terminology (15 credits)
This course will include (indicative) content such as:
- Safe use and maintenance of basic and relevant hand tools
- Identify job roles within the allied trades sector
- Work practices among the trades
- Interpreting project requirements
- Selecting appropriate tools and materials
Allied Trades Projects (15 credits)
During this course you will collaborate with other trades to carry out an allied trades project.
You’ll take part in teamwork, safely use tools and materials, communicate with a diverse range of other construction workers, and listen to and follow instructions.
You’ll also need to identify and apply the relevant compliance requirements for your project work.
Further study options
If you enjoyed this programme, you could move into the New Zealand Certificate in Painting and Decorating (Level 4). This is run as an apprenticeship through BCITO with block courses held at Otago Polytechnic.
Workload
Your workload
On campus classes will run from Monday – Wednesday, 8.30am-4.30pm. You will also need to complete some self-directed learning on Thursdays and Fridays. There is the option to attend work experience with a local company during this time to gain experience in the painting and decorating industry.

English Language requirements
- If English is not your first language, you must provide:
- New Zealand University Entrance OR
- Overall IELTS 5.0 (general and academic, no band score lower than 5.0) achieved in one test completed in the last two years, OR
- Acceptable alternative evidence of the required IELTS (see here for internationally recognised proficiency tests and proficiency outcomes for international students).

If the number of applicants exceeds the available places, a waitlist will be used to ensure preference is given to applicants in order of application.

The tuition fees shown above are approximate only. There may be a slight fee increase per year once Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) rules and guidelines are applied. These fees also don’t include additional costs or living costs.
Studylink
Domestic full-time students can apply for a student loan through Studylink.
Some support may be available for domestic part-time students if this programme offers a part-time study option.
Apply at the same time as you apply for your course (you can withdraw your application anytime).
Fees Free
The Government has announced that Fees Free for the first year of study or training will finish at the end of 2024. A final-year Fees Free policy will replace it, starting from 1 January 2025.
If you are a first-time tertiary learner in 2025, you may be able to get Fees Free for your final year of study or training. If you are eligible, you will need to apply for your entitlement through IRD from 2026 onwards.

For most students, your tuition fee shown above includes a Student Services Fee – also known as the Student Levy. This compulsory fee covers your access to the student services we offer. This cost is tailored depending on how you're studying.
The international tuition fee does not include your Student Levy. This will be calculated when you enrol with us.
