Girls only! OSTC Building and Construction (Level 2)

If you’re at secondary school and want to learn some practical, hands-on skills that will help you on your career pathway, you can learn at our Otago Secondary Tertiary College (OSTC).

Construction is taking off! There are so many careers in this area and this is a great opportunity for more girls to be involved. This course is run by a female tutor and all the other students are girls too. It's a really supportive environment and you don't need any experience or skills to get started. You'll gains skills as you go and get to build some exciting projects!

You will gain the New Zealand Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades (Level 2) as well as 40 credits towards NCEA Level 2. 

During this Certificate, you will:

  • Plan projects
  • Operate hand and power tools
  • Build furniture and structures, e.g. a garden shed
  • Learn safe work practices.

What could I do next?

Where could this take me?

  • Builder/Carpenter – constructing and maintaining buildings
  • Joiner/Cabinet Maker - designing and making furniture and cabinets
  • Stonemason – turning rough stone blocks into structures like walls and buildings
  • Construction Manager – ensuring buildings are constructed according to agreed contracts
  • Quantity Surveyor – ensuring buildings are designed and completed within budget
  • Architectural draughtsperson – producing drawings used on site by building contractors. 

Cancellation of a programme

Any programme of study, course or course occurrence may be cancelled or postponed where there are insufficient numbers. As far as is practically possible, we avoid cancelling or making other significant changes less than two weeks before the programme starts (or five working days for short courses). If this happens, we will do our best to suggest alternative study options for you. If you don’t want to do the alternative programme, we will give you a full refund. For international students, if a programme change affects your visa status, we will let you know and support you to find an alternative option. We also advise Immigration New Zealand of any programme change that will affect international students.
