This course will run two days a week in Cromwell.
In Dunedin it will run one day a week for the first two terms and two days a week for the second two terms.
What You Study
- Work in a commercial kitchen
- Prepare, cook and present dishes common to the industry
- Learn health and safety requirements
- Learn effective customer service and communication techniques.
What could I do next?
- Study the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 4) and go on to study the Bachelor of Culinary Arts with us.
- Gain employment and train on the job to become a commis chef, demi chef or chef de partie.

Fees
In most instances, study at OSTC will be fully funded, with no cost to you or secondary school. However, please note that OSTC is only funded for a limited number of places.
Additional places may be offered, however your school will be charged a fee.

What is OSTC?
The Otago Secondary-Tertiary College (OSTC) is our trades academy. We offer practical, career-focused learning for students in Years 11-13 who want to get a head start on life after school. You’ll develop hands-on skills and experience to help you prepare for further study, on-the-job training and employment.
Your programme will be one subject of your NCEA. You’ll spend one or two days a week at OSTC and the rest of the week at school as normal.
OSTC has a campus in Dunedin and one in Cromwell.
When you apply to study with Otago Polytechnic in 2023, you will be enrolled with Te Pūkenga, the new national network of vocational and applied education in Aotearoa New Zealand. You will learn in the same way, in the same place, and with the same people. The great news is that this enables us to share skills and knowledge across a network of passionate education providers, to better help you succeed. Enrolling in programmes that start in 2023, means that you will graduate with a Te Pūkenga qualification.
