OSTC Hospitality (Level 2) - Dunedin

Are you at high school and interested in food and working with people? Consider a career in hospitality!

You’ll be working towards the New Zealand Certificate in Hospitality (Level 2).

What will I do?

  • You will be learning and working at our Ako espresso café and Manaaki training restaurant. These are both open to the public and with support you will be involved with operations and serving customers. 
  • Prepare and cook café-style food using a variety of methods
  • Learn to prepare great café-style espresso coffee, and then serve it to customers in the Ako espresso café
  • Learn Front of House restaurant service and put this into practice in the Manaaki training restaurant
  • Learn effective customer service and communication techniques, and health and safety requirements.

What could I do next?

  1. Study the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 3), the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 3) (Café Services) (Bar Services) or go on to do the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 4) or New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 4) (Restaurant Services) with us
  2. Gain an apprenticeship and complete your chef training or your food and beverage service training on the job
  3. Get a job in a café or restaurant as barista or kitchen staff.

What is OSTC?

The Otago Secondary-Tertiary College (OSTC) is our trades academy. We offer practical, career-focused learning for students in Years 11-13 who want to get a head start on life after school. You’ll develop hands-on skills and experience to help you prepare for further study, on-the-job training and employment.

Your programme will be one subject of your NCEA. You’ll spend one or two days a week at OSTC and the rest of the week at school as normal.

OSTC has a campus in Dunedin and one in Cromwell.

A change for 2023 enrolments

When you apply to study with Otago Polytechnic in 2023, you will be enrolled with Te Pūkenga, the new national network of vocational and applied education in Aotearoa New Zealand. You will learn in the same way, in the same place, and with the same people. The great news is that this enables us to share skills and knowledge across a network of passionate education providers, to better help you succeed. Enrolling in programmes that start in 2023, means that you will graduate with a Te Pūkenga qualification.
