School of Midwifery
Study our internationally-recognised midwifery programmes and benefit from experienced teachers, flexible delivery options and hands-on learning. And our teaching staff are as passionate as they come.
Over the past 25 years, the Otago Polytechnic School of Midwifery has seen over 450 of our students graduate by studying from our delivery locations in Wellington, Palmerston North, Whanganui, Dunedin, Central Otago and Southland.
Our real-life approach to learning sees our students working with qualified midwives and people who are pregnant from their first month of study.

Study wherever you are with blended delivery
Fit your studies around your family and lifestyle with our flexible learning options. We teach our 3-year Bachelor of Midwifery by blended delivery at six NZ-wide satellite locations, and all our postgraduate programmes and professional courses are taught online – so you can study where you live.
Te Ara ō Hine – Tapu Ora
Te Ara ō Hine — Tapu Ora is a national programme that was created to help address the need for more Māori and Pasifika midwives across the motu. We provide resources to help you study and complete your midwifery qualification, so that Māori and Pasifika babies can be born into Māori and Pasifika hands.
We provide services to all learners who whakapapa Māori or Pasifika—wherever you are on your whakapapa journey.
Scholarships and funding
We offer a selection of scholarships and funding to break down any financial barriers some students may encounter. You may be eligible for one or more of the following:
College of Midwives grants and subsidies
Irihapeti Ramadan Memorial Scholarship
North Island Midwifery Scholarship
Free preceptorship resources
If you are a registered Midwife considering preceptorship (our student mentorship programme), or you have recently graduated, returned to practice or completed the competence programme for overseas midwives, we have a range of free online resources for you to tap into.
Student stories
Student midwives in the community
Our first-year midwifery students ‘follow through’ a woman and her family in a supportive role during pregnancy, childbirth and the early weeks at home with the baby.
Our second-year students ‘follow through’ a woman, focusing on the midwifery aspects, learning the skills of midwifery in a ‘hands on’ way, closely supervised by the midwife involved in your care.
We have students based in Dunedin, Oamaru, Central Otago, Southland, Wellington, Hutt Valley, Kapiti Coast, Whanganui, Palmerston North and the Wairarapa.
