Educator Pathway

This pathway enables Lead Maternity Care and core midwives to deploy their skills and experience in the service of educating other midwifery professionals.

About the pathway

Interested in becoming a midwifery educator? Our four fully online midwifery education courses can get you started with a Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery Practice.

Tailor your learning and continue on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery, then extend your reach by completing an education-focused Master of Midwifery research project.

The courses

The four courses that make up this pathway are: 

Principles of Midwifery Education - Honouring Ako and Mātauranga Māori*

02 February - 03 April 2026

This course enables ākonga/learners to critically reflect upon and apply the principles of adult teaching and learning within the context of midwifery education, and within the unique cultural landscape of Aotearoa. Specialist knowledge of educational theoretical underpinnings will be explored, prioritising mātauranga Māori within midwifery education.

*This course is a prerequisite to completing any of the following three courses.

Learning Design and Assessment for Midwifery Education

20 April - 26 June 2026

This course enables ākonga/learners to develop learning resources, strategies for delivery and effective assessment and evaluation practices within the context of midwifery education in Aotearoa.

Clinical Teaching and Learning in Midwifery

20 July - 18 September 2026

This course enables ākonga/learners to plan, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of midwifery education in the clinical context. Ākonga/learners will develop their critical reflection skills in relation to strategies that promote equity and cultural competence/humility within clinical education contexts.

Staying Connected: Midwifery Education in a Digital Age

05 October - 04 December 2026

This course enables ākonga/learners to develop knowledge and skills for learning and teaching within the digital space, incorporating the principles of mātauranga Māori where known.
