Kieran McGrannachan enjoys the challenge and diversity of Engineering. “I like the satisfaction of problem solving,” he says, “which is probably enhanced by the fact that I work for myself!”
Kieran is the co-founder and director of Structural Engineering Design Solutions (SEDS). He and his father, Lyndsay – who is also an engineer – started SEDS in 2015. “We saw it as a challenge and opportunity to work for ourselves and to offer engineering services with a point of difference, focusing on prompt delivery,” he explains. “We currently employ two staff, who are actually also Otago Polytechnic graduates!”
A Dunedin local, Kieran first graduated from Otago Polytechnic in 2006 with a Diploma in Civil Engineering, and again in 2012 when he completed a Bachelor of Engineering Technology, specialising in structures and transportation. He’s now a specialist in the field of engineering design for residential and commercial buildings and earthquake assessments.
Kieran completed his degree while working full-time – something he admits was ‘a challenge’. However, his qualification has allowed him to have his previous knowledge gained through work formally recognised. It has also given him a deeper understanding of the theories of specialist engineering topics.
“The highlight of my degree was completing the final year project,” he says. “It was an interesting topic which related well to my work projects – plus extracts of my report were used in published articles.”
