Inspired to give back by family experience

After her first child required life-saving surgery, Sally-Ann Ealson knew she had to give nursing one more try.

As an adult student, my biggest fear was coping with the ‘computer side of things’, but with the help of my husband, my daughters and my classmates I managed – I was determined not to let it beat me!

Sally-Ann had always wanted to be a nurse, but unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in obtaining a place. Then she decided to apply for Nursing at Otago Polytechnic as an adult student.

“I applied a few times when I was younger, but it was only when my own daughter got sick that I realised how much I had to give to the profession. When she became well enough to manage her own health, I applied for a NZ Diploma in Enrolled Nursing and was accepted.”

With a busy family, finding the time to study hasn’t always been easy for Sally.

“I am a very organised person, and that really helped, but at times it was difficult for the family. Fortunately, my husband was able to help when I couldn’t get time off, and I made a point of spending extra time with my younger child during the holidays.”

Sally is grateful for all the opportunities the degree has provided her.

“I’ve loved all the placements and have been able to experience a wide variety of roles. I am really looking forward to getting a job. I don’t mind what type of nursing I do because I really have enjoyed every part of it!”
