A popular option for students in New Zealand is flatting. Flatting is a type of shared accommodation which involves a number of people living together in the same house or apartment. Usually, each person (flatmate) will have their own bedroom – with the kitchen, bathroom, and living areas shared with everyone else. Rent and bills are also split equally among all flatmates.

Depending on the number of bedrooms, your individual rent may range anywhere from $150 – $200* per week (bills excluded). Some flats will be furnished and others unfurnished (make sure you check this before accepting a room). You will also be required to pay a bond (usually two to three weeks rent) which will be refunded to you when you leave (provided you have not caused any damage to the house).

Please note your bond should be formally lodged with the New Zealand Department of Building and Housing.

Alternatively, you may decide to set up a lease with an apartment, but this can be costly. Bond is usually much more expensive than a flat. You will also be required to sign a contract which makes you personally liable to see out the lease length (usually six months to one year).

A one-bedroom or studio apartment is usually around $250* per week (bills excluded). Two to three bedroom apartments can range anywhere from $400* to $500* per week (bills excluded).

There are pros and cons to all accommodation types. Start looking now so you can find the best option for you!
