Academic dress

You will order your academic dress through the Registration to Attend your Graduation Ceremony form via Student Hub when it is open.

If you have not registered by the closing date you will not be able to hire an academic dress for the ceremony and will not be able to attend the ceremony.

You will order your academic dress and graduation trencher from your online registration form. 

Size for academic dress


Short and Petite, height 158cm or shorter


Short, height between 159cm -163cm


 Medium, height between 164cm -176cm


 Tall, height between 177cm -187cm


 Extra Tall, height 180cm or taller

Size for graduation trencher

You require a trencher if you are graduating with a Bachelor, Graduate Certificate or Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma, or Master.

Measure your head circumference in centimeters, measure around your head from the middle of your forehead and across the tops of your ears. 52cm - 65cm ( except 62cm and 63cm)

(Please note: Academic dress from overseas is not available)




Pay for your academic dress

Once you have registered for graduation, you can pay for your academic dress by:

  1. Visit Otago Polytechnic Customer Services in person
  2. Call Customer Services on 0800 762 786 to make a credit card/debit card payment over the phone
  3. Pay at the Gown Room when you collect your academic dress. (CARD PAYMENT ONLY)
  4. Pay via Student Hub then click on Financials.


Cancellations should be notified to Customer Services at least five days prior to graduation. Cancelled orders will be fully refunded by cheque. The processing of refunds takes approximately 14 days.

Hire from other Insitutions

If you hire regalia from another academic institution and do not collect your regalia you will be charged for the hire.

Friday 14 December 2018 8.00 am – 12.00 pm



Return dates

All items of academic dress hired must be returned to the Gown Room at one of the above times. Replacement costs will be charged for any lost, damaged or soiled items of academic dress. The replacement value of a full set of Otago Polytechnic academic dress is $1000.

Academic dress can be collected and returned on your behalf by friends or family members. However, the responsibility for safe return of academic dress is still yours.

About Otago Polytechnic Academic Dress

The academic dress worn at Otago Polytechnic was designed in 1994 by third year students of the Otago Polytechnic Diploma in Fashion and Design course. By taking a Scottish style bachelor's gown as inspiration, the designers maintained the traditional Celtic link with Dunedin, while adapting the unique colours and motif from the Otago Polytechnic shield. By combining these two influences, the students established an appropriately traditional but unique and very distinctive look.
