Arboriculture programme

Work outdoors and enjoy a hands-on, physical job. Arborists are in demand for their ability to care for, and maintain, trees. This industry-standard qualification provides learners with the knowledge and skills to carry out tree maintenance and management activities at heights including tree removal. Graduates of this programme will receive both the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) (Arboriculture) and New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Services (Level 4) (Arboriculture).

General and Amenity Horticulture programme

Do you want to enter the horticulture industry? This qualification will give you the work-ready skills needed to do just this in a range of sectors. Field trips and work experience are a key part of this programme. This programme will give you the work-ready skills you need to enter the horticulture industry, focusing on the amenity and landscaping sectors. Field trips and work experience are integral to this programme. Graduates will achieve both the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) (Amenity) and the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) (Landscape Construction).

New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Level 3) (Companion Animals)

Want to have an exciting career working with animals but not sure where to start? Start here! This programme is your first step if you want to enter an animal-related profession and you will learn about the health, welfare, anatomy and physiology of companion animals such as cats and dogs. Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to enter the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) (Veterinary Nursing Assistant).

New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) (Rural Animal Technician)

  • Distance with block courses in Dunedin or Wairarapa and work experience

This qualification will give you the skills required for a successful career in companion animal healthcare. It will enable you to become a Veterinary Nursing Assistant, the first step to becoming a Veterinary Nurse. In addition, it will also enable you to then enter the New Zealand Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Level 6) where you will gain the skills to become a Registered Nurse.

This 17-week, Dunedin-based scheme for 16-25 year olds is run in partnership with the Malcam Charitable Trust and is a stepping stone into education and employment in the primary sector industry. You will take part in a work placement, improve your study skills, gain an Otago Polytechnic certificate qualification and learn how to put together a great CV!

High country farming programme

Farming careers are fun and rewarding and there is strong demand nationally for passionate people who want to work with livestock in the farming industry. This Central Otago-based qualification is the only farming training programme in New Zealand with a high country flavour. Graduates of this programme will receive both the New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Farming Systems) (Level 3) and New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Vehicles, Machinery and Infrastructure) (Level 3).
