Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 4)

Now you can train to become an engineering technician no matter where you live in New Zealand!

Do you want to prepare for degree -level study in engineering? Then this programme is the perfect option and will give you a Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 4). Successful completion of this programme will provide you with entry to our Bachelor of Engineering Technology where you can specialise in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

Engineer technicians are in high demand around the world and our engineering programmes provide you with the practical knowledge that you need to enter employment in this diverse industry.

Our modern equipment and facilities will allow you to gain industry-relevant, hands-on skills and many of our staff are experienced industry practitioners. This means that you will benefit from their high level of skill and up-to-date expertise and knowledge. 

This programme will only run if there are sufficient numbers.

Please note: Our other Level 3 pre-engineering option provides direct entry to our New Zealand Diploma in Engineering. If you are not sure which level is the best option for you, don't worry. We will interview you before the start date of the programme and place you at the level which suits you best.

From 2018, this programme name will change to the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4)* (subject to final approval). This is due to a national review of qualifications that is being carried out by NZQA across all New Zealand tertiary institutions.

  • A strong interest in engineering 
  • Self-motivation and commitment 
  • A good work ethic. 
Entry requirements
  • NCEA Level 2 maths.
  • If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.5, with no band score less than 5.0.

Additional documentation

You must supply certified copies of proof of identity, academic records and/or CV if you have been working and proof of residency (where appropriate).

Selection procedure

You will be interviewed to assess your suitability for this programme. If it is in your best interests, we may recommend an alternative programme for you.

Additional costs

You will need to provide your own personal stationery and a calculator. It is desirable that you have access to a wifi-capable laptop to assist you with your studies.

You will study

The first three courses are taken from our New Zealand Diploma in Engineering qualification and provide the basis for the delivery of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology. The fourth course will enable you to gain the maths knowledge required for entry to the degree.
