New Zealand is a world-class tourist destination and tourism is one of this country’s leading industries. It is vitally important to our economy and there are numerous employment opportunities for qualified individuals both within New Zealand and overseas.

This exciting, hands-on Certificate will give you the skills to provide a quality visitor experience through your in-depth knowledge of New Zealand tourism destinations. You will also be able to implement customer service and information advice and contribute to the overall effectiveness of a tourism business.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to work in a variety of roles in the tourism industry, in areas such as customer service and sales, and in frontline, attraction and activity positions.

During this programme, you will take part in a series of local industry visits and will organise a trade show. You will also go on a three day, educational field trip to Queenstown - the world-renowned, adventure capital of New Zealand. Here you will have the chance to engage in tourism activities first-hand to build your experience and knowledge of this industry. 

This qualification is taught using real-life scenarios and you will benefit from the expertise and guidance of our industry-experienced, qualified teaching staff. 

Entry requirements
  • You must be at least 17 years old.
  • You must hold NCEA Level 2 OR have relevant work experience in retail/sales/hospitality or any customer service-related industry.
  • If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.5, with no band score less than 5.0. 
Selection procedure 

If there are more applicants than places available, applicants will be prioritised based on the level of industry and academic achievement. 

Additional costs 

You will be required to purchase a corporate uniform which will cost $300.

You will study

This Certificate is a 60-credit qualification, made up of two 30-credit courses, Tourist Experience and Tourism Professional.

During the Tourism Experiencecourse you will acquire the skills and gain the knowledge to assist tourists in experiencing New Zealand’s diverse tourism regions, attractions and activities. You will also experience destinations first-hand on various field trips, as well as sampling tourism products such as accommodation, transportation, activities and attractions.

During the Tourism Professional course you will gain the skills and attributes to become competent with workplace practices in New Zealand tourism enterprises. This includes demonstrating communication skills and applying customer service strategies, relevant New Zealand legislation and the application of core Māori values in a business context. This course also includes a career session on how to prepare your CV and an overview of interview skills.

Your workload 

You will be required to undertake approximately 21 hours per week of directed study in the form of lectures and practical work sessions.  It is expected that you will contribute 14 hours of your own time in self-directed study to allow for successful completion of this Certificate.

Further study options 

Expand your employment potential by studying our Diploma in Applied Travel and Tourism (Level 5). Alternatively, you could consider studying one of our other business qualifications. These include a range of diplomas or the Bachelor of Applied Management.
