All short courses are offered at Mosgiel Library. You can start these anytime but will need to go to this venue to complete these courses.

All the courses are flexible, allowing you to study at your own pace, and will be run as group workshops as well as individual tuition sessions. This gives you a fantastic opportunity to learn in a positive and supportive environment.

Introduction to MYOB*

Duration: 2 days, 4 hours per day
Cost: $125

*You must book this course in advance. This course will only run if we have sufficient numbers. 

Mind Your Own Business (MYOB) is an accounting programme designed for small to medium businesses. This course will take you through getting started and building on the skills needed to use the programme effectively. You will need to have some knowledge of accounting or book-keeping. There are three options available for this course:

  1. Basic Accounting Intro Book: Learn the terminology and concepts to use the MYOB program.
  2. Intro to MYOB Book: – This book explains the user interface and covers Creating a Business and Completing Transactions.
  3. Introduction to MYOB Workshops.

Downloading and using Skype

Duration: Up to 10 hours
Cost: Free

Learn how to download Skype from the internet and navigate through it. You will be able to add other users to your Skype list and speak with them using a headset connected to the computer.

TradeMe

Duration: Up to 20 hours
Cost: Free

Learn how to become a buyer or seller; earn extra income by selling items from around your home or by starting a small business using this online auction system. You will also receive instruction on how to register with TradeMe – auctioning, bidding, buying after the auction, creating advertisements, uploading digital photos, pricing, shipping and more.

Maintaining your computer

Duration: Up to 20 hours
Cost: Free

Learn how to perform essential maintenance on your computer such as deleting temporary files, running Scandisk and defragmenter, emptying the Recycle Bin, overcoming computer freezes and opening up the system unit to replace or upgrade parts. We will also cover basic troubleshooting and internet security for spyware and viruses.

Would you like to create your own movies with Windows Movie Maker?

Duration: Up to 20 hours
Cost: Free

Get started with video editing by doing this introductory course on Windows Movie Maker. Use your digital video movie camera/digital camera and your computer’s video editing software to edit your movies to be so exciting and fast-paced they won’t leave your friends yawning! Get tips on filming techniques and how to import video into Windows Movie Maker, editing and adding audio, saving movies and burning them to CD or DVD.

Introduction to your iPad or Tablet

Duration: Up to 10 hours
Cost: Free

Come and find out how to make the most of your iPad or Tablet. Learn how to download and manage apps, set up your email accounts, use the virtual keyboard, take, manage and edit photos, sync your photos with photostream and organise photos that are sent to you via email.

Windows 8

Duration: Up to 20 hours
Cost: Free

Get up to speed with the new functions in Windows 8. We will show you how to navigate around the new tile interface, customise your settings, transfer your old files into Windows 8, and download and manage new apps (for example, mail, photos, music videos and much more).

Introduction to Adobe Photoshop

Duration: Up to 10 hours
Cost: Free

Have fun learning how to add background colour, luminosity, special effects, text, sketching, textures and much more to your images. Let your imagination go wild and delve into the many features available in Photoshop.

Introduction to Word

Duration: Up to 20 hours
Cost: Free

Gain word processing skills and learn how to create, edit, format and print many types of documents such as letters, memos, CVs, flyers and much more.

Introduction to Microsoft Access

Duration: Up to 20 hours
Cost: Free

Discover how to create a database to collect information and store it in a database file. Helpful for keeping track of things such as your recipes, telephone numbers, clients’ details or your CD collection.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel

Learn how to create and use spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are very handy for working with numbers and formulas as it is a quick and easy way to calculate and make sense of large groups of figures. Spreadsheets can be used for a variety of tasks including financial accounting, forecasting and projecting results, recording and comparing data and keeping track of personal budgets.

Learning the Internet

The internet is a wonderful source of information that is available at your fingertips. This course will show you how to use the internet and will teach you about websites.

Gain skills in keyboarding with this useful course. Learn how to type correctly and at a greater speed. 

Microsoft Outlook

Duration: Up to 20 hours
Cost: Free

Discover how to use Microsoft Outlook properly. Learn how to navigate the outlook windows screen, understand the folders structure, how to select messages, how to organise them correctly, how to send and receive messages, and how to schedule meetings.

Windows 10

Have you just updated to Windows 10?  Having trouble finding your files?

Understanding camera techniques on your iPad, iPhone or tablet

Come along and capture still photos and create video clips.

Use your device to take photos and videos and understand exposure, movement and editing techniques.  Get to know your camera, and its capabilities to create albums and save your images.

“Siri”

Let your voice do the searching! Use Siri to find that website, email, appointment, direction, or reminder. Through your voice control, Siri can help you create emails, find your contacts or just play music, without touching the keyboard.
