Techniques will be taught assuming students have some previous ceramic experience. Students can build on existing knowledge by working individually with the tutor at a more advanced level. Some of the skills covered include hand building techniques, throwing on the wheel, glaze mixing and application as well as some firing techniques. 

The Art School Ceramic Studio is well-equipped, providing a safe and sociable working environment. Tools are provided but if you have any clay tools bring them along. Wear old clothes, overalls or an apron and wear covered footwear. You may also want to bring an old towel that can get dirty. 

Please note: in addition to the course fee, you will need to spend at least $30 on materials. Please see Materials section below for more details.

Classes are held in the Ceramic Studio at the Dunedin School of Art. Please click here for a map.

Go to the main entrance of the Dunedin School of Art at 19 Riego St (off the Anzac Avenue end of Albany Street). The Ceramics Workshop is the concrete block building at the far end of the carpark towards the stadium. 

Tutor

Classes in ceramics are taught by ceramic artist, Michael Tannock.

Materials

A glaze material fee of $10 per student is to be paid to the tutor at the beginning of the course. This covers basic glazes for the course duration. Clay is available at $20 for a 20kg bag for stoneware and red, $25 for a 20kg bag for sculpture clay and $20 for a 10kg bag for white clay. 

Extra glaze materials are available for sale for larger works or to make up special glazes. However, in most cases the $10 fee will cover this.

Tools are provided but if you have any clay tools you may bring them along. 

Both clay purchases and the glaze fee need to be paid to the tutor by cash or cheque.

Students must be over 16 years of age.
