Looking to become an automotive repair technician, workshop foreman, automotive business owner or self-employed mechanic
Learn from professionals and gain sought after skills with an automotive apprenticeship pathway brought to you by Otago Polytechnic. This apprenticeship option allows you to work in the automotive industry as an employee under the supervision of someone who is prepared to train you. At the completion of your apprenticeship – which allows you to earn while you learn – you will achieve a respected and in-demand qualification: The New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (level 4).
The apprenticeship addresses industry standards and provides students with the full support of regional coordinators.
You can undertake the one-year New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) which will prepare you with the skills needed for industry. Alternatively, if you find your own motor industry employer who is prepared to take you on as an apprentice you can enter directly into the apprenticeship scheme and undertake compulsory block courses and practical on-site apprenticeship assessment.
To be eligible to enter our motor industry apprenticeship you must:
- Have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) and have gained an apprenticeship working for someone who is prepared to train you OR
- Have sourced your own employment in the motor industry as an apprentice.
The regional apprenticeship scheme from Otago Polytechnic is competitively priced.
Fees are only $650 including GST per year – with no hidden or additional costs.
If you are already working and enrol to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) (see Option 2 above) you will be required to attend block courses and night classes in Dunedin.
Further study options
The apprenticeship scheme will prepare you for full-time employment in the motor industry. However, many graduates may wish to go on to further study including the New Zealand Certificate in Motor Industry (Advanced Technical) (Level 5) offered through MITO. Please note that to complete this Level 5 qualification through MITO, you need to currently be employed.
