High-Country Farming

Study high-country farming in stunning Central Otago and gain an extensive range of best-practice farming skills in the classroom, workshop, woolshed, and high-country. You’ll learn about animal handling and health, vehicles and machinery, pastures and soils, and food and fiber production.

Farming is just as much about being outdoors, doing hard physical work, as it is about learning specific parts of the industry – be it wool, technology or regenerative practices. With this hands-on qualification, you'll enjoy learning outdoors, on-farm practical assessments and work placements. You will learn by doing, working high-country farm, doing practical tasks, and experiencing different things almost every day. By the time you leave, you’ll be confident, competent and work-ready.

The biggest point of difference at Otago Polytechnic is our real-world approach to learning. During your studies, you will participate in a farm-based work experience placement. This experience will give you the skills to seamlessly transition from study to employment or promotion within the farming industry.

Agriculture & Animal Care

As the only farming programme in New Zealand with a high-country focus, this programme has a hands-on approach to learning to fully prepare you for a career in high-country farming. Covering a wide range of skills, you also have the added benefit of on-farm practical assessments, as well as work placements on local high-country stations. As a graduate, you could be employed in pastoral farming/rural-based workplaces under limited supervision.

For domestic students, our July 2022 intake is fully-funded through the Government’s Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF) – meaning your tuition fees are free and you’ll just have to cover any additional/living costs.
