Soil is a fundamental unit for any horticulturist or viticulturist to understand.

Gain a thorough understanding of how soils store nutrients and water, and the interaction and use of these by plants. Learn about soil testing and fertility planning.


This is a five day course with each day running from 9.00am-3.00pm. The course is delivered in two blocks, one of three days and one of two days. Start dates are yet to be confirmed.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of soils and fertilisers (5 credits)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of soil properties and their effect on plant growth (10 credits).
Materials and clothing

Please wear warm clothing suitable for learning in an outdoor environment. All materials and equipment are supplied for this course. 


These courses are based around unit standards within the National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) qualification. If you wish to officially gain the unit standard(s), you can sit an assessment and will receive a certificate recognising your achievement.

If you are learning for interest, you do not have to sit an assessment and will receive a Certificate of Attendance to demonstrate that you completed the course.
