Painting and decorating is a creative job that requires a sense of design as well as the core skills of surface preparation, painting, rolling, and wallpapering.
Painters and decorators bring everyday spaces to life.
They apply decorative and protective finishes to interior and exterior walls, doors, windows and other surfaces of buildings. They have to know what products to use, and they also provide advice on colour selection and interior design.
This is an exciting industry that is constantly changing, with new paint products and techniques being released all the time.
The construction industry plays a huge part in the New Zealand economy. Qualified tradespeople, including Painters and decorators are in high demand to complete a huge range of residential, commercial, building and infrastructure development projects.
A qualification in painting and Decorating from Otago Polytechnic will get you directly involved in this trade. You’ll get stuck into practical sessions in our purpose-built facilities and take part in work experience so you can hit the ground running when you graduate.
As part of your studies, you’ll have the chance to take part in decorating a house after our Carpentry students have built it. The house then gets auctioned off for charity each year.
