Looking for a way to get some hands-on learning and increase your chances of getting a job? This programme, offered in partnership with the Malcam Trust, has a great mix of study and hands-on experience and will give you the skills you need to work in farming, agriculture, horticulture, conservation or other outdoor-related areas.

New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2)

This foundation level programme is a great option if you want to re-engage with study and gain confidence and skills to enter the workforce. You will undertake community work, volunteering and/or practical trade learning at Otago Polytechnic. This will enable you to gain industry experience and knowledge in your chosen career pathway.

New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3)

This programme offers you the chance to improve your study skills and prepare for higher level learning or employment. It includes either a general study context or a work context. Along with improving your reading, writing, presenting and computer skills, you will also gain valuable employability skills such as CV and interview preparation, and how to write a cover letter. Depending on the course you choose, this programme offers practical workshops and community volunteering opportunities.

Beauty Therapy

Bridging certificate to beauty therapy

Gain foundation communication, career and study skills, as well as specific knowledge of human biological science and practical beauty skills. Successful completion of this programme will give you a New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3) and ensure you meet the academic entry requirements for our New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4).

Business

Want to gain the skills needed for higher level learning? This Certificate will teach you what is needed for diploma- and degree-level study in a business context. Successful completion will guarantee you entry into the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5), New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel (Level 5) or the Bachelor of Applied Management as long as you meet the stated English Language requirements for the specific programme,

Culinary Arts

New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 4)

Begin your journey from cook to chef in this programme available at both our Dunedin and Central Otago campuses. Involving lots of hands-on, practical cooking in our training kitchens, and a work experience opportunity, this qualification will expand the skills you have developed in a Level 3 cookery programme. Plus, you can study this programme FOR FREE in Central Otago from July 2020 (you'll just need to cover your student levy and equipment).

Engineering

Fashion Design

Embark on this hands-on qualification to acquire the technical skills, knowledge and industry-awareness necessary for further study in the Bachelor of Design (Fashion) or to gain entry-level roles assisting with design, styling, retail/merchandising, and basic garment construction.

Don’t have the academic requirements you need to enter one of our diploma- or degree-level healthcare programmes? No problem. By studying courses such as Function of the Human Body and an Introduction to Careers in Health, you will be well-prepared to apply for your chosen diploma or degree. This programme is made up of two qualifications - the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3) with a health context and the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) with a health context.

Human & Community Services

New Zealand Certificate in Whānau Ora (Level 3) - TTAF funded

Arai Te Uru Kokiri Centre and Otago Polytechnic have developed this programme to train whanau and support workers to understand how to support each other and to uplift, listen to and help each other be successful. Graduates of this qualification will be able to work under supervision to apply knowledge of Māori philosophies and theories of Māori wellbeing. This qualification will prepare you for entry level work caring for or supporting people, from youth to adulthood.

Information Technology

This programme is your first step if you want to enter an animal-related profession and you will learn about the health, welfare, anatomy and physiology of companion animals such as cats and dogs. Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to enter the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) (Veterinary Nursing Assistant). This programme is not available to international students.
