Diploma in Applied Sport and Exercise Leadership (Level 5)

Please note: The first year of this qualification is the Certificate in Applied Sport and Exercise Studies (Specialty). This is the qualification you will initially be enrolled into. Upon successful completion of the Certificate, you will then progress into the Diploma in your second year if you choose to do so.

Personal Training and Exercise Prescription specialty

Prepare for employment as a gym instructor or personal trainer and help people to reach their health and fitness goals. All sports certificate and diploma qualifications are currently being reviewed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Qualification titles and content may be altered as a result of the review but any changes will be introduced and communicated over a transitional period so that there is minimal impact on students.

Entry requirements
  • We prefer that you have 48 NCEA credits at Level 2 with at least 8 credits in an English-rich subject OR equivalent qualifications/experience.
  • International students will be individually assessed to ensure they meet diploma-level entry requirements.
  • If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 6.0, with no less than 6.0 in writing and speaking, and no less than 5.5 in reading and listening. 
Additional documentation

You must supply certified copies of proof of identify, academic records, proof of residency (where appropriate) and curriculum vitae.

Selection procedure

Eligible applicants will be accepted onto this programme using the following criteria:

  • Demonstration of willingness to study
  • Evidence of gym experience or participation in a similar activity.

Where there is any doubt about meeting these criteria, an interview/phone interview will be conducted to gather further information about the applicant and to assess interpersonal and communication skills which are vital to being a personal trainer. A final decision to accept or decline the applicant for this programme will be made post-interview.

Should the number of eligible applicants exceed the number of available places, applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Wait-listed applicants will be contacted if a place becomes available up until the commencement of the programme.

Additional costs

Sport Management and Coaching

There are no additional costs associated with this programme.

Personal Training and Exercise Prescription

You will be required to purchase medical equipment for fitness assessments (approx. $110) and a limited number of text books (approx. $200). You will also be expected to purchase Otago Institute of Sport and Adventure (OISA) clothing.

Further study options

After completing either strand of our Diploma, expand your employment potential with our Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Activity, Health and Wellness) or Bachelor of Applied Management (Sport Management). Successful completion of this Diploma will give you advanced standing so you may be able to progress into the second year of these qualifications. Other opportunities exist within the University of Otago's Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Physical Education degree programmes.

Sport Management and Coaching

A key ingredient to this programme is the extensive work experience that you will undertake and the important industry relationships you will forge. Study alongside leading sports managers and elite coaches, use the latest in sports technology, gain event and facility management insight and experience the reality of managing and coaching a sports team. Enjoy a unique blend of theoretical and practical learning during this innovative programme and benefit from our excellent range of facilities.

You will cover a broad range of topics including Assistant Coaching and Management, Technology in Sport, Psychological Skills Training and Small Business Management along with a range of theory and applied courses to deepen your understanding and provide you with a solid base of practical experience.

Personal Training and Exercise Prescription

Enjoy the balance between hands-on and theoretical learning that will enable you to meet the varied demands of working in the health and fitness industry. Complete a series of work placements in a range of different fitness facilities where you will train and experience the fitness industry first-hand. Gain personal training experience by supporting a number of real clients progress towards achieving their health and fitness targets. In addition, you will learn about the complexity of the human condition, including an understanding of the physical, mental, cultural and emotional components of healthy living, and will benefit from the support and guidance of highly experienced teachers.  

Cover a broad range of topics including Sport Massage, Health-related Fitness Monitoring, Exercise Psychology and Small Business Management along with a range of theory and applied courses to deepen your understanding and provide you with a solid base of practical experience.

Your workload

An average week may involve between 16-20 contact hours and you should commit yourself to 9.00am-5.00pm each day. You will also be expected to undertake self-directed study to successfully complete this qualification.

Qualification structure

The first year of this Diploma is the Certificate in Applied Sport and Exercise Studies (Specialty). This is what you will initially be enrolled into and what your Offer of Place letter will say. Upon successful completion of your first year, you can then progress into the Diploma in your second year if you choose to do so. 

You must achieve passes in all core, specialty specific and elective courses for both year one and two to achieve the Diploma.
