Certificate in Automotive and Mechanical Engineering (Level 2)

If you are a 16-19 year old* and feel that school wasn't right for you, check out this option!

Our Youth Guarantee Scheme (YGS) gives you the chance to enrol in this hands-on programme and pay no fees.

You will gain valuable practical experience whilst also improving your literacy and numeracy skills. This will open up a whole new world of work, education and training opportunities.

Learn how to carry out servicing on engines, brakes or fuel and electronic control systems, install automotive accessories and carry out general engineering tasks in welding, fabricating and machining.

*You may undertake this Youth Guarantee programme if you are 15 years old at the time that the programme commences AND you have an early leaving exemption from school.

Entry requirements

To qualify, you must:

  • Be a domestic student
  • Be a 16-19 year old OR be 15 years of age at the time when you commence the programme AND have an early leaving exemption from your school 
  • Not already hold a Level 3 qualification in any subject
  • Have been thinking about leaving school and getting a job OR prefer to be working towards a career rather than staying at school OR have left school and are not sure how to enter higher education or employment
  • Want to learn practical skills
  • Be more motivated in a non-school setting and be prepared to enrol in a full-time programme.
Additional documentation

You will only be required to provide additional documentation upon enrolment and will be informed exactly what you need to produce.You must supply certified copies of proof of identify and proof of residency (where appropriate).

Selection procedure

All applicants will be invited to visit the School and meet with staff to discuss the programme.

Further study options

Entry into the pre-trade Automotive or Engineering programmes are the preferred options for further study. Or you may go directly into an apprenticeship training programme.

Programme specific risks

All students are required to participate in Health and Safety training including a First Aid certificate as part of their orientation at the start of the programme. Aspects of safety are reinforced throughout the programme.

You will study

You will undertake studies in the following areas:

  • Electrical technology
  • Engine technology
  • Engineering technology
  • Fabrication technology
  • Industry practice
  • Machining technology
  • Vehicle technology
  • Welding and cutting technology.

By the end of this programme you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a general level of trade-specific technical knowledge and skills
  • Work safely and effectively under supervision
  • Be knowledgeable of the environmental and sustainability issues associated with your skills
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills (both written and spoken)
  • Communicate effectively in team and multi-cultural environments
  • Demonstrate the capacity for independent critical thinking.
Your workload

You will be expected to attend classes on campus Monday to Thursdays, 8.00am to 3.00pm. 
In the second semester Fridays are set aside for work experience, and you will complete a minimum of 115 hours of work experience during the programme.

Youth Guarantee fees and allowances

The Youth Guarantee Fees Scheme will cover the tuition fees, material and equipment costs of your programme of study. 18-19 year olds enrolled in fees-free Youth Guarantee qualifications will now be able to access the course-related costs part of the student loan and student allowances if they meet the eligibility criteria. Those under 18 years old will not be able to access any part of the student loans. Funding for travel is available (conditions apply). Please visit the Studylink website for full details.
